Goals from Valentina Giacinti (her fourth in the competition), Beata Kollmats and Elena Linari were enough for the Giallorosse to clinch the three points their performance fully warranted, as they dominated proceedings at Eden Arena.
“The girls did really well, because they were really focused and put in a great performance,” coach Alessandro Spugna said.
“We scored a few goals and created a lot of chances and that’s encouraging. We are really pleased that some other players came in and did well; that shows that the squad are all working hard and everyone is ready to perform.”
With Wolfsburg winning elsewhere the exploits of Spugna's side were nonetheless not quite enough to secure top spot in the final group standings, but with 13 points from a possible 18 the side can be very pleased with the efforts that have booked a quarter-final place.
The side will find out their last-eight opponents at the start of February.
“Of course it’s important, we were saying before the game today that we were going to end this year with a win – so it feels really good," Kollmats said after the game.
“Of course it is nice to score, it doesn’t happen that often for me! But I am glad that I can help the team and I am happy that I got to play the full game today. I enjoyed it.”
The game ultimately became an opportunity for Spugna to give invaluable experience to a number of younger members of the squad, as Zara Kramzar started in midfield and both Anastasia Ferrara and Nina Kajzba entered the fray in the second half.
