A second-half substitute for Daniele De Rossi, Francesco Totti pulled Roma back from the jaws of defeat with his 301st goal in 753 games in all competitions. Il Capitano's strike lifted his career goalscoring average back up to 0.4 per game – it had dropped to 0.398 after his run-out against Bologna. Totti has now scored 245 goals in 596 Serie A appearances.

Roma failed to take home all the points after being two goals to the good for the third time this season, once again away from home. It had previously happened during a Champions League tie against Bayer Leverkusen that finished 4-4 and there was another 3-3 draw in the league against Chievo Verona on 6 January. It's also the second time that this has occurred against Atalanta – back on 12 February 1989 goals from Daniele Massaro and Rudi Voeller inside 19 minutes put the Giallorossi into an apparently comfortable lead only for Evair before half-time and Armando Madonna two minutes from the end to level it up at 2-2.

The draw in Bergamo continued the trend in which Roma struggle in the league after the derby, taking at least three matches to get back to winning ways. The 4-1 victory on 3 April has been followed by two draws against Bologna and Atalanta. Previously, the 2-0 success in November preceded three draws and a loss, while the 2-1 win in May came before defeat on the final day of last season and a draw at the beginning of the current one. Going still further back, January 2015's 2-2 scoreline was followed by three more draws. The last Rome Derby that didn't have a knock-on effect was the goalless draw in February 2014, to which Roma responded with a 3-0 victory over Sampdoria at the Olimpico and a 1-0 victory away against Bologna.

Roma have found themselves in a losing position in three of their last four Serie A matches, against Inter, Bologna and Atalanta; the only time they haven't needed to come from behind in that period was in the 4-1 victory over Lazio. The Giallorossi went on a similar run in the exact same matches earlier in the season, trailing in the reverse fixtures against Inter, Bologna and Atalanta but not in the derby, which Roma won 2-0.

Sunday's 3-3 draw against Atalanta – with Lucas Digne, Radja Nainggolan and Francesco Totti on the score sheet for Roma – is the sixth time that a game between Atalanta and the Giallorossi has yielded six goals. The only other 3-3 came on 3 December 1950 (Stig Sundqvist, Mario Tontodonati and Ione Spartano netting for us in Rome). Atalanta recorded a 4-2 Coppa Italia success in Bergamo in September 2000 while the Giallorossi have managed two 4-2s of their own (away in December 1966 and at home in February 1987) as well as a 5-1 triumph in Bergamo in December 1952.

Luciano Spalletti's men have not kept a clean sheet in seven outings since beating Palermo 5-0 in February, conceding nine goals in the process. This weekend's encounter at Atalanta was the only time in that spell when Roma have let in more than one goal in a single match.

Francesco Totti's late equaliser in Sunday's 3-3 draw takes Roma's total goals tally in all competitions to 81 for the season. It is the highest figure since they racked up 108 in 2009-10, which began with Luciano Spalletti in the dugout but saw Claudio Ranieri at the helm for most of the campaign. Since then, Roma's highest goals total in a single season came in 2012-13 – 80 from 43 matches under Zdenek Zeman and Aurelio Andreazzoli. Roma are now averaging 1.93 goals per game this term (it was 1.96 in 2009-10), 2.12 in Serie A. That is the Giallorossi's highest goals-per-game average for a league season since 1930/31, when they set their all-time record of 2.56, bettering the 2.37 of 1928-29 and the 2.15 of 1929-30.
