Shakhtar 2-1 Roma: Match report, reaction and key statistics

IMAG

Roma will have to win at the Stadio Olimpico in three weeks' time if they are to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League, after losing 2-1 to Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday.

Cengiz Under grabbed his fifth goal in four games to give the Giallorossi a late first-half lead at Kharkiv's Metalist Stadium, only for Facundo Ferreyra and Fred to score for the hosts in the second 45 minutes to turn things around.

Cengiz's goal means Roma will progress with a 1-0 win at the Olimpico on March 13 - but they have to win the game to have any hope of going through.

Team selection

Despite being laid down by a virus on Tuesday, Alessandro Florenzi was passed fit to take his place on the right of the Roma defence.

Daniele De Rossi captained the side, with both Diego Perotti and Kevin Strootman coming into the starting XI after being late substitutes in Saturday's win over Udinese.

Roma reaction

“We got the opener and were almost perfect in the first half. We didn't fall apart but we did drop off a bit.“We struggled to deal with it but this game's in the past now and we have to look forward. In the end it came down to the small details.”

- Alisson Becker

“I saw two completely different teams out there today. There were lots of players I should have taken off after we conceded the first goal."Unfortunately, we gave them encouragement because our intensity dropped off and we made less of an effort to play our game.

"The difference was that in the first half we tried to hurt them while in the second we were looking to hold on – to what, I don't know. I'm not at all happy with how we played after the break.

- Eusebio Di Francesco
