Gasperini: "A win like this is great for morale"

Gian Piero Gasperini spoke to Sky Sport after Roma beat Fiorentina.

Here's what the boss had to say:

It's uncommon to see four goals in a Serie A match this season. Has the team picked itself up again?

“We've improved in attack in the second half of the season and we've been scoring more, albeit conceding a few more too. We're in good form, although every game is very tight. We know we can't afford to make any mistakes if we want to keep climbing the table. A win like this is great for morale.”

You've always believed it was possible to qualify for the Champions League. What was it you saw in this team?

“I thought we could get certain players firing again and have a well-rounded team. With a stronger squad, we can compete.”

How strong is this team mentally?

“Mentally they're incredibly strong. Technically they're doing great things too but from a mental perspective from the first day of pre-season there have never been any problems. These players never let up and they follow me. We're trying to achieve something that would be fantastic for us, and it's something we've desperately wanted since the start.”

Next year do you see Donyell Malen plus five others? Or perhaps Paulo Dybala in attack?

“For now let's get Dybala, [Matias] Soule and [Stephan] El Shaarawy back properly for these remaining games. The team's morale has always been excellent and we've always tried to get the most out of every game. Tonight, after the recent spell, they looked even stronger.”

How can you strengthen this team?

“That's a topic for further down the line. We have three more matches to play and, as I said, there's no room for error. We have to do our very best and hope that other results go our way.”

You were asked that question because the Friedkins are in Rome.

“I'm focused on the here and now. The future comes later.”

Niccolo Pisilli was one of the standout performers, covering every blade of grass.

“Definitely. This team was for a long time one of the best defences in Europe. Then we lost a few players at the back. Now we're getting back to how we were in the first few months of the season, with the addition of Malen. It's easier to get results like this.”
