Games against Juventus always create a special level of anticipation for Roma fans – games against the Bianconeri invariably mean more, for reasons both historical and personal.
One of the iconic games of Italian football, matches involving the two sides are rarely straightforward – especially in the Italian capital, where so many memorable contests have take place.
Here are 10 that perhaps stand out above all the others…
The club’s first-ever victory over Juventus – and what a win too. You could say it was an epic; going on to form the basis of the first film ever to be made about football (titled, perhaps unsurprisingly, ‘Cinque a zero’). Lombardo, Volk, Bernardini (2) and Fasanelli got the goals, ensuring 15 March 1931 will always be a notable date in club lore.
Oddly enough, of the three Scudetto seasons in club history this is the only one where the Giallorossi also managed a victory over Juventus. It came at the Stadio Nazionale, in November 1941, as Alfred Schaffer’s side outmuscled the Turin side thanks to goals from Krieziu and Panto.
Roma 1 Juventus 0, the goal coming from Agostino Di Bartolomei. It only happened once, in December 1978, as a Roma side that would become truly great in the years ahead gave a little taste of what was to come. A game that many fans of a certain vintage remember fondly, especially for the iconic photo of club doctor Alicicco covering Di Bartolomei’s mouth in mock concern after the matchwinner was also shown a late red card.
The Olimpico was a sea of red and yellow for this one, as the Giallorossi seemed to be clawing their way back to win a title that looked to be Juventus's for so long. And they would have done it too - if not for a subsequent loss against Lecce that stopped everything in its tracks. This was a day for celebration, though, as Graziani, Pruzzo and Cerezo scored the goals in an emphatic victory.
Among the celebrating ballboys at the end of this game was a blond 13-year-old by the name of Francesco Totti. The hero of the day at the Flaminio, however, was Stefano Desideri - as the home side took advantage of the swirling wins that sometimes occurred at the diminutive ground to overwhelm their visitors. A week before Christmas in 1989, what a present it was for the fans.
The first victory as coach for Carlo Mazzone, the perfect tonic after a losing start at Genoa. Abel Balbo scored his first-ever goal for the club, under the Curva Sud, as Roberto Muzzi also got the other in a 2-1 win. But most fans will remember the game for the two penalties Juventus missed - Roberto Baggio seeing his saved by Tancredi before Gianluca Vialli also spurned his chance from 12 yards.
A spicy affair, this one - not just for the burgeoning rivalry between the two sets of players (and the historical one between both clubs) but for a few ongoing disputes being played out in the media too. On the pitch, at least, it was Zdenek Zeman's men who emerged triumphant - with Paulo Sergio and Vincent Candela scoring the decisive goals.
The biggest win over the Old Lady since that 5-0 triumph in 1931 - although for most fans this remains the pinnacle in games against Juventus. Roma ran riot that day and Totti, famously, made sure Igor Tudor knew it - playing the final score on his fingers as the defender tried to give him some stick. Olivier Dacourt, Totti and Antonio Cassano (twice) scored the goals on that February night.
The season as a whole might never go down as one of the most memorable in Roma history, but this game was certainly a high point worth savouring. Andrea Andreazzoli's side emerged 1-0 winners in this game thanks to an absolute rocket from Totti - the No. 10 lashing home the loose ball from a blocked free-kick with a power that left Gianluigi Buffon rooted to the spot.
A quarter-final at the Stadio Olimpico, won against a Juventus side that would win the league with a 102-point haul that season. Gervinho converted from Kevin Strootman's assist, ensuring a clean sweep of trophies would not be on the cards for the Bianconeri this time.
