    Stat Attack: 10 facts to know ahead of Europa League match


    Here's ten things you should know ahead of Thursday's Europa League clash with Borussia Monchengladbach.



    Previous meetings with German opposition

    Roma have faced German opponents 35 times before in European competitions, winning 16, losing 16 and drawing three, with 52 goals scored and 58 conceded. There have been eight match-ups in the Champions League, two in the European Cup, 12 in the UEFA Cup, four in the Cup Winners' Cup and nine in the Fairs Cup.

    Roma's home record in 18 matches against teams from Germany reads 11 wins, two draws and five defeats.

    German number 13

    Borussia Monchengladbach will be the 13th different German club Roma have faced. The other 12 are FC Koln (7 times), Bayern Munich (6) Bayer Leverkusen (4), Hamburg (2), Borussia Dortmund (2), Carl Zeiss Jena (2), Berliner FC Dynamo (2), Dynamo Dresden (2), Hannover (2), Hertha Berlin (2), Karlsruhe (2) and Nurnberg (2).

    Historic friendly precedent

    The most relevant previous meeting between Roma and Monchengladbach was a friendly match. On 9 February 1997, the Giallorossi beat Borussia 3-0 in a 45-minute game as part of the three-team 'Città di Roma' tournament (Ajax were the other side). Damiano Tommasi, Marco Delvecchio and Francesco Totti were the scorers that and the young Totti was the star of the show – so much so that his performance convinced president Franco Sensi not to go ahead with the proposed sale of the future captain to Sampdoria.

    Borussia against Italians

    Gladbach have only lost one of their previous six encounters with Italian opposition, winning three and drawing two of the other five. That solitary defeat came away to Lazio (2-0) in the Europa League in February 2013.

    Roma in Europa League groups

    Since losing their first-ever match in the Europa League in September 2009 (0-2 against Basel), Roma have gone 13 games without defeat in the group stage (W8, D5).

    Edin Dzeko has scored nine goals in six Europa League starts for Roma. He has one so far this season, which came in the 4-0 defeat of Basaksehir on Matchday 1.

    Roma's record appearance-makers against German clubs

    Bruno Conti and Franco Tancredi have made the joint-most appearances (11) for Roma against German opposition. The next three on the list are Sebastiano Nela (10), Roberto Pruzzo and Totti (8).

    Last match against a Bundesliga outfit

    The Giallorossi's last meeting with a German side was on 4 November 2015, against Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League. It ended 3-2 to us with Mohamed Salah, Dzeko and Miralem Pjanic (penalty) on the score sheet.

    Individual records against Gladbach

    Edin Dzeko was unbeaten in the five matches he played against Monchengladbach during his spell at Wolfsburg, winning four and drawing one. He also scored three goals and set up one in those games.

    Aleksandar Kolarov also has an unbeaten record against Borussia, having faced them four times while at Manchester City in the Champions League group stages. He won three and drew one, with an assist to boot.

    Nikola Kalinic meanwhile met Monchengladbach twice in the Europa League with Fiorentina, with one win, one defeat and one goal.
