Captaincy nod gives Ciccotti boost heading into 2020

Roma Women midfielder Claudia Ciccotti is looking to take another step forward in 2020, after a positive end to last year.

Ciccotti saw much of 2019 ravaged by a serious knee injury, before increased competition for places left her struggling to find chances to regain her match sharpness.

But she forced her way back into the side later in the year, even captaining Betty Bavagnoli’s side in December’s impressive 4-1 away win at Inter Milan.

“I think 2019 was an important year for Roma,” Ciccotti said.

“We finished off the first season for Roma Women, a historic season – and then we began a new campaign with new targets and so much desire to do well.”

She added: “The team spirit this season was immediately good, the new players settled in very quickly. We added quality players with international experience to the group – but at the same time they were all ready and eager to buy in to the project to help everyone improve.”

Reflecting on her own struggles, Ciccotti was upbeat.

“My 2019 didn’t start off so well, I was injured and away from the squad – but my teammates always supported me,” she said.

“I came back and over the last few games of last season I was able to make a contribution. I always try to look at the positives and I’m pleased with how I’ve recovered.

“This season it’s been harder to get in the team, but nevertheless I’ve felt like a key part of the squad and the group. Luckily the year finished well, with three key wins – and something else I didn’t expect, getting to wear the armband.”

That came in the victory over Inter, as Ciccotti followed in the footsteps of Elisa Bartoli and Giada Greggi to become yet another Rome-born, Roma fan to captain her side.

“That was definitely a huge honour, something very emotional,” she said.

“Especially because I didn’t expect it – because [Elisa] was trying to play in that game right up until kick-off. Unfortunately she couldn’t make it, and then in the changing room she came up to me and gave me the armband.

“I was speechless. I thank her for that show of faith – I’ll remember that day for a long, long time.”
