Porto 3-1 Roma: Controversial Champions League exit

Roma suffered a painful, frustrating and controversial exit from the Champions League on Wednesday night - in a game ultimately defined by two late VAR decisions.

A penalty awarded to Porto in the 115th minute after using the video technology ultimately proved decisive in the tie, as Alex Telles converted to make it 3-1 on the night and 4-3 on aggregate to the Portuguese side.

But in the dying moments Moussa Marega appeared to bundle down Patrik Schick inside the box - a decision that referee Cuneyt Cakir chose (this time) not to review personally, after advice from the video referees.

That moment effectively decided the tie, after the match had finished 2-1 to the hosts in normal time.

That repeat of the first leg scoreline ensured the match continued for an extra 30 minutes. It was Francisco Soares who had given the Portuguese side the early lead on the night, only for captain Daniele De Rossi to equalise from the penalty spot.

But De Rossi was forced off through injury before the second half - a fate that would eventually befall his replacement, Lorenzo Pellegrini, too - and Roma were forced into defensive measures after the break, especially once Moussa Marega levelled up the aggregate scores with a back-post finish.

Roma finished strongly, however, and had chances - especially in extra-time - to score a second goal and effectively decide the tie. Instead, VAR would end up playing the decisive role.
