Roma and Italy great Egisto Pandolfini passes away

The club was saddened to learn of the recent death of Egisto Pandolfini, who represented the Giallorossi with class and quality between 1952 and 1956.

A central midfielder who was already an Italy international by the time of his arrival in the Italian capital in 1952, Roma spent what was then a club-record fee in order to bring the Fiorentina-raised player to the club.

Joining the Giallorossi after their return to Serie A following one season in the second division, Pandolfini was a key member of the group that re-established the Giallorossi as a proper force in Italian football.

In total he scored 29 goals for the club, while playing a huge part in the side that came third in the league in the 1954-55 season – the club’s best finish in Serie A between the outbreak of the Second World War and the mid-1970s.

In 1956, a serious knee injury effectively ended his career with Roma. With Italy he represented the side at two World Cups, in 1950 and 1954, scoring in both – making him one of only a handful of players (along with the likes of Roberto Baggio, Christian Vieri, Gianni Rivera, Giuseppe Meazza and Alessandro Del Piero) to do so.

    Grazie, Egisto.
