Norbert Gyomber to wear the number 23 shirt

The Slovakian defender is Roma’s sixth summer signing, after the arrivals of Iago Falque, Wojciech Szczesny, Edin Džeko, Mohamed Salah, and Antonio Rüdiger.

The No. 23 is the same shirt Gyomber wore in his last season with Catania in Serie B, while he donned the No. 24 jersey the year before as he contested his debut Serie A season with the Sicilian outfit.

Since the 1995-96 season, the first year that squad numbers were introduced in Italy, the No. 23 shirt has been worn by a wide range of Giallorossi players. Alessandro Rinaldi wore it during Roma’s Scudetto-winning 2000-01 season, while Christian Panucci inherited it in the 2002-03 season before swapping to the No. 2 shirt the following season.

John Carew and Alberto Aquilani have also donned the No. 23 jersey over the years, while Mirko Vucinic wore it during the 2006-07 season, his first in the Italian capital. In the 2008-09 season, the No. 23 was held by Vincenzo Montella, the legendary Roma No. 9 of the 2000-01 Scudetto, who had returned to the club for a second stint after a spell at English side Fulham.
