With Wednesday’s vital Champions League match between Roma and BATE Borisov fast approaching, we bring you ten stats you need to know about the clash…

0

BATE Borisov have failed to win any of their five away matches in this year’s competition (including qualifiers) and have lost their last three.

1

BATE have managed one Champions League draw in Italy, a 0-0 stalemate with Juventus on 10 December 2008. Dmitri Likhtarovich, Vitali Rodionov, Igor Stasevich and Aleksandr Valadzko, who are all in the Belarusian outfit’s current squad, played the full 90 minutes of that match, while current coach Aleksandr Yermakovich came on in the 89th minute to make his last European appearance as a player.

2

Roma have failed to score in just two of their last 31 matches in all competitions. The most recent game in which the Giallorossi drew a blank was the 2-0 home defeat by Atalanta on 29 November – it was Roma’s first home loss since the last day of the 2014-15 season.

4

BATE Borisov have played a total of four away matches in Italy, drawing one, losing three and failing to score a single goal.

5

Edin Džeko has scored five goals in his last eight appearances at club and international level.

8

In their eight previous Champions League campaigns, Roma have only failed to make it through the group stages in the 2004-05 and 2014-15 seasons. The Giallorossi will automatically qualify for the last 16 if they beat BATE on Wednesday night, but a draw will also see them through if Bayer Leverkusen fail to beat Barcelona (if Bayer and Roma are level on points, their head-to-head record will favour Roma). The Giallorossi will automatically be eliminated if they lose.

10

On 16 October, BATE recorded their tenth straight win in the Belarusian Premier League with a 2-0 home victory over FC Vitebsk. On 8 November, BATE finished the season with a 4-1 win over SFC Slutsk, ending up as champions with a 12-point advantage over second-placed FC Dinamo Minsk.

15

No team has scored more goals than BATE Borisov in the first 15 minutes of Champions League matches this season – the Belarusians have four such goals from the first five matchdays.

30

Over the course of the first five Champions League matchdays, BATE Borisov have managed just 30 shots on goal, fewer than any other team in this year’s competition.

2012

Rudi Garcia faced BATE as LOSC Lille manager on September 2012. On that occasion, the Belarusians won 3-1 in France to record their first-ever victory in the Champions League group stages. The BATE side that evening featured current squad members Aleksandr Hleb, Dmitri Likhtarovich, Dmitri Mozolevski, Denis Polyakov, plus Edgar Olekhnovich and Aleksandr Valadzko – the goalscorers in Lille back in 2012.
