“When I heard about Roma’s decision I was delighted for the club and for Spalletti,” declared the Brazilian goalie. “He’s a great coach and for me he still has a lot to achieve with Roma. “
Doni explained that Spalletti had been vital to his own career: “He’s really important to me. He believed in me and gave me my chance when I arrived from Brazil. The step up I made in my career, becoming the goalkeeper of Roma and the national team, was down to him and Bruno Conti. They showed faith in me and gave me my debut.”
Doni joined Roma ahead of the 2005-06 season, the first with Spalletti at the helm. He became the first-choice keeper a few weeks after the start of the season, growing into a key part of the team that secured a record 11 straight league wins and went on to win two Coppa Italias and one Italian Super Cup.
“We came close to winning the league under Spalletti,” recalled Doni. “I think that the new ownership set-up at the club can help him triumph.”
