Using a connection to god a sure-fire way to make sure a new branding campaign goes viral fast.
AS Roma have today unveiled their brand new club logo, and the Giallorossi roped in the head of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis, to make sure their new brand received instant worldwide recognition.
Delegations from AS Roma and SS Lazio met Pope Francis on Wednesday morning ahead of the Coppa Italia final on Sunday, and Roma President James Pallotta used the occasion as a platform to launch the club’s new crest.
According to a statement on Roma’s website, they have introduced “an updated brand identity system that honors and builds on its rich history, highlights the club’s connection to Rome and modernizes one of the most beloved brands in football and establishes the visual direction for the Club for years to come.”
The crest pays homage to the story captured by La Lupa Capitolina, the famous bronze sculpture of a she-wolf suckling twin infants Romulus and Remus, inspired by the legend of the founding of Rome.
AS Roma President James Pallotta handed Pope Francis a perspex plaque of the new logo at the ceremony on Wednesday, whilst Roma talisman Francesco Totti handed the Pontiff a replica Roma jersey.
