Falcao recognised by Italian football's Hall of Fame

Falcao

Roma legend Roberto Falcao was one of nine individuals added to the Italian football Hall of Fame on Tuesday, in a glamorous ceremony in Florence.

Falcao, already a member of the Giallorossi's Hall of Fame, became the second Brazilian to join the illustrious club, as he was recognised for his vast impact and achievements during his time with Roma.

The Hall of Fame was created by the FIGC and the Fondazione Museo del Calcio (Football Museum Foundation) in 2011, as they strive to celebrate the people who have left a lasting impression upon the history of Italian football.

“This honour is two-fold for me because [Roma coach Nils] Liedholm has also been [posthumously] rewarded," Falcao said.

"He was the most important person I met on my journey.”

“The Hall of Fame represents a celebration of tradition,” said FIGC president Carlo Tavecchio.. “One of footballing culture that highlights the past, helping to build upon the present and also looking to the future.”

After the ceremony, Falcao spoke with reporters about the current Roma side.

Can Roma catch Juve?

“Yes – they can easily make up the one-point deficit, although Juve do have a game in hand against Crotone. The most important thing is that Roma win the matches they should be winning.”

But you think Roma are good enough?

“Yes, they are. They’re winning even when they’re not playing well and that’s a sign of real solidity. I enjoyed their last two away wins, both of which finished 1-0. That tells you that this Roma side have real character.”

Are Juve still the team to beat?

“Juve are always the team to beat. It was like that back in the 1980s too. The only thing that’s different is that Roma have been up there challenging Juve for the title for a good few years now.”

Would you give Luciano Spalletti a new contract?

“I like Luciano as a coach. He’s very talented and has already proved that, but it’s the club that has to make the call.”

And what about Francesco Totti?

“Francesco must do what he thinks is right and his decision should be respected, on account of what he’s achieved and what he represents. He can still make an important contribution when the team is in a tight spot. Obviously he can’t play every minute, but when he does play he’s capable of making all the difference. He understands how he can be of use to Roma and Spalletti is showing real intelligence in managing this phase of his career well.

“Totti’s quality means he’s always been important for Roma. He never stops amazing you – he really is extraordinary. He deserved to win the Ballon d’Or in his career.”

Roma have a Brazilian goalkeeper now in Alisson. How do you rate him?

“He’s a good goalkeeper. He’s up to the Roma standard.”
