We'll see them in alphabetical order – from the A of Aldair to the Z of Zebina – with a special mention for president Franco Sensi, the architect of that triumph.
What about his own role? “I got a few substitutions right that year. And after the match we lost 3-2 to Milan at San Siro, I went into the dressing room and told my players we were going to win the league. I wasn't wrong. But let's talk about the lads...”
Aldair Nascimento Santos: An immense player with a huge personality. You're a lucky coach indeed if you get to work with an amazing defender such as him. A World Cup winner.
Antonioli Francesco: A good goalkeeper who I asked Roma to bring in from Bologna. I knew him from our time together at Milan. He made an important contribution in several key moments.
Assuncao Marcos: A Brazilian midfielder with a fine set of skills – such as his ability to take free kicks. He also weighed in with some crucial goals that year.
Balbo Abel Eduardo: He didn't play much but he was an important dressing-room figure – someone lots of the younger players looked up to. We also had him to thank – as well as several others – for convincing Batistuta to come to Roma.
Batistuta Gabriel Omar: The player we needed to take us up to the next level. A born goalscorer, a penalty-box striker. He bagged 20 goals that year, breaking the deadlock in matches when it looked like we weren't going to win.
Cafu Marcos: A right-sided player who was one of a kind and got all over the pitch. He was tremendously skilful and one of our star performers, providing a load of assists as well as a few goals.
Candela Vincent: A bit like Cafu, he had this ability to really make a difference in the opposition half. I came up with the idea of maximising the attacking verve of these two full-backs.
D’Agostino Gaetano: One of the up-and-coming youngsters of our Primavera team, together with [Daniele] De Rossi and [Alberto] Aquilani. I handed him his senior debut that season in a game against Brescia.
Delvecchio Marco: A key tactical element in our team. With his work rate on the left he gave us balance, as well as being unpredictable for opponents when he got into the area.
Di Francesco Eusebio: Another one of the quiet leaders in the team, a veteran who had been at Roma for a long time. He got injured at the start of the season but returned to help us out towards the end.
Emerson Ferreira da Rosa: He picked up an injury in August and we had to do without him until January, but then he quickly became one of our most important players. He brought power and tactical nous to our midfield.
Guigou Gianni: A Uruguayan midfielder with good technique who was one of our rotation options. He also provided a few assists along the way.
Lupatelli Cristiano: Such a funny guy and a decent goalkeeper who I relied on in several crucial matches over the course of the season – including the first game against Lazio. He was the perfect back-up keeper.
Mangone Amedeo: An experienced centre-back who we signed from Bologna the year before, along with Antonioli and Rinaldi. He was an able stand-in for our defenders, ensuring solidity at the back.
Montella Vincenzo: He wasn't a strong, physical centre-forward but he was supremely skilful and rarely put a foot wrong in the box. He notched 13 key goals in the league that season.
Nakata Hidetoshi: People thought I was mad when I brought him on for Totti against Juventus in Turin, and yet he was instrumental in that game: he scored our first goal then helped Montella get the equaliser.
Rinaldi Alessandro: A player who could operate both in central defence and at right-back. He didn't play a lot but I'm sure that with the five subs of nowadays, he and many of the squad we had would have played more.
Samuel Walter Adrian: Ones of those who were key to our success. A rock-solid Argentina centre-back with a steely focus. He joined us when he was just 22 but he displayed a maturity beyond his years.
Tommasi Damiano: Our Scudetto triumph was possibly the best season of his career. A workhorse midfielder who covered every blade of grass. One of the leaders of the team.
Totti Francesco: What is there to say? A club icon. Roma's. The man capable of picking passes in midfield that no one else could even see. He was as prolific as a striker too – he got 13 that season, the same as Montella.
Zago Antonio Carlos: One of the core ingredients you need to win the league. An experienced, strong, well-rounded centre half. Another great player.
Zanetti Cristiano: He was one of the signings I asked for to strengthen the squad the summer before our Scudetto. He'd impressed at Cagliari and we got him from Inter in exchange for [Luigi] Di Biagio.
Zebina Jonathan: Like Zanetti, he'd impressed me at Cagliari, and at Roma he proved to be a positive addition. He got his playing time and contributed to the cause with his physical presence at the back.
Sensi Franco: The president and all his family were very important in my coaching career. They gave me the opportunity to coach Roma and win the league title thanks to the signings they made. I'll forever be grateful to them.
