Cufre hails Fazio's 'unrivalled' consistency so far this season

CUFRE

Former Roma defender Leandro Cufre has paid tribute to compatriot Federico Fazio - saying he has become a 'defensive leader' for the Giallorossi.

Cufre, who played in the capital from 2002 to 2006, stopped short of calling Fazio the best defender in Serie A this season, but was happy to acknowledge the huge impact he has already made.

“If there’s one thing that’s not changed since I arrived in Trigoria 15 years ago, it’s that we Argentines give 115% on the pitch," Cufre said. "Football fans – especially Roma supporters – love that.

"On top of his character Fazio is a great player and is having an incredible season, so that goes a long way to explaining his success.”

Is he one of the best centre-backs in the league?

“I don’t know if he’s the best because there are some world-class defenders in the league – look at Juventus, for example. That said, the consistency he’s achieved this season in terms of his fitness and performance levels has been unrivalled. He’s a defensive leader – he might seem quiet but you know he’s there. You can always feel his presence.”

Can Roma win the league?

“Yes, because they have it all: great players, a great coach and a serious project behind them.”

You worked with Luciano Spalletti in your last year in Trigoria...

“Yeah, so I know what I’m talking about! He’s quite unique [laughter], but out on the training pitch he really is a phenomenon. He’s made Roma a very solid, attractive side.”
