Sousa: We know we need to take our chances

SPAL

Fiorentina boss Paulo Sousa has called for his side to be clinical in front of goal if they want to get a positive result against Roma on Tuesday.

Sousa's side enter the game looking to do the double over the Giallorossi, after edging a 1-0 victory at the Artemio Franchi earlier in the season.

A greater cutting edge in the final third proved the difference that day - and Sousa believes his side will have to have produce a similar display at the Stadio Olimpico.

"We want to score one more goal than the opposition to win the match and that's what I try to put across to my players," Sousa said. "Our mentality mustn't change based on whether we're playing at home or away and that's what we're doing at the moment.

"We must be effective and clinical, taking our chances right from the word go and perhaps that will see the result go our way."

The boss confirmed that striker Nikola Kalinic and recent signing Riccardo Saponara won't be in the matchday squad, but goalkeeper Ciprian Tatarusanu and defender Gonzalo Rodriguez have both travelled with the team.

"Roma have great ability, particularly in transition," the Portuguese added. "They can score goals and are excellent down the flanks. They understand how to use space and that makes life hard for the defending team. They've changed system and approach compared with the reverse fixture but we are capable of defending well and attacking even better.

"As for whether we should play like we did against Juventus, the opposition are different. We know, either way, that Roma will cause us problems and I definitely want to see that same spirit and intensity."

Sousa concluded by stating his admiration for Francesco Totti.

"I've said in the past that Totti's career has been a fairytale," he said. "Being a player is the best thing there is in football, so he needs to keep playing as long as he feels up to it. He has lots to offer Roma both as a footballer and as a figure in the team and then as part of the club."
