El Shaarawy scored a sublime free-kick on the stroke of half-time to drag his side back into the contest, before his intervention helpd Edin Dzeko put the Giallorossi ahead early in the second half - a lead the side would not relinquish.
“That was what we wanted after the defeat at Juventus Stadium," El Shaarawy said. "We were keen to end the year with a win and that’s what we’ve done.
"We’re pleased – now we’ll take a break and then come back as strong as ever.”
He added: “We just need to focus on ourselves and take it game by game without thinking about Juventus, who are having another great season. We need to try to win every match because we have a fantastic group here.”
You seem to be back on top form – you attempted several shots and scored a free-kick.
“I’m always trying to score. It was the first free kick I’ve taken in a proper match and it turned out well. I’ve always remained calm and accepted the coach’s decisions – I want to thank him for everything. I feel relaxed and all I’m trying to do is to keep moving forward and giving my all.”
What is your aim for 2017?
“I want Roma to achieve big things, and on a personal level I want to get into the Italy squad, play regularly at Roma and – why not? – score a few more goals.”
