Fazio: We have to start the fightback in Milan

The two sides meet at the San Siro having endured disappointing runs over recent weeks, with the Giallorossi having gone four games without a win since Fazio's dramatic last-gasp winner against Cagliari in December.

But Fazio is confident that, with a week to clear minds and re-focus, Eusebio Di Francesco's side will soon rediscover their true quality when league action resumes.

After the winter break…

“It was important for us to return motivated after the international break, which came at the right time. It’s useful to relax the mind and recharge the batteries ahead of the second half of the season. We know that we have not done well in the last two months, especially in the last four or five games. The most important thing is to identify the things we haven’t done well and find a way out.

"We are confident we can address the current situation. We have to start doing so in Milan. We have to rediscover our way of playing, from a bit over a month ago. Our objective has always been to qualify for the Champions League and we are aiming for that.”

The Inter threat...

“Inter aren’t just [Mauro] Icardi. And we have changed a lot since the first meeting. This one will be different: we have to work hard to get better and shut Inter down. Icardi is a great player, it would be good to see him again [with Argentina] at the World Cup.”

The defensive unit...

“With the coach we have worked a lot on the defensive phase, since July. From set-pieces we have tried both zonal marking and man-marking: the tactics change a bit depending on the attributes of our opponent. We know that we can change things without issue, as Di Francesco has explained everything. Defending in three or four is the same: we are professionals and from set-pieces we work on all the various situations.

"We want to put ourselves at the disposition of the coach and follow whatever he wants to do. We can play in a lot of different ways. For me, playing in the centre (of a three-man defence), or as the right or left centre-back is all the same. I’ve shown that I can do well in a four-man defence.”

“From the first minute here I have really enjoyed it. What will happen in the future you never know, but I am very happy here and would like to stay for many years. Roma is an incredible city, it’s amazing to walk through the centre. More generally, in Italy I enjoy the culture and the personal aspects, it’s a bit like Argentina in that way and I really like it.”
