Piacenza's Stadio Garilli was the unlikely venue for the momentuous occasion, which ended in a 2-0 win for Como after Traianos Dellas was sent off for the Giallorossi.
De Rossi started the game, holding his own in midfield alongside the more experienced duo of Olivier Dacourt and Damiano Tommasi. It was his first Serie A appearance, despite making his debut for the club in October 2001 as a Champions League substitute.
Now the club captain, De Rossi has gone on to make (at the time of writing) 578 appearances for the club in all competitions, scoring 59 goals. That includes 432 games (41 goals) in Serie A, 54 (5) in the Coppa Italia, four (two) in Supercoppa matches, and 88 (11) in European competition.
The 34-year-old went on to enjoy a fantastic international career too, making 117 appearances for the Azzurri and winning the World Cup in 2006.
