Roma legend Francesco Totti has been named as the recipient of the prestigious Exceptional Achievement Award by the Laureus Academy.
Totti, who retired in May after a 25-year playing career with his boyhood club, is just the second person ever to receive the prize.
He follows in the footsteps of the most-decorated Olympian of all-time, swimmer Michael Phelps, after being recognised for his career achievements by Laureus at a star-studded awards ceremony in Monaco on Tuesday.
Speaking after the announcement Totti - who was confirmed as the latest Laureus ambassador earlier in the day - expressed his gratitude at being recognised for the award.
“Thank you to everyone for this fantastic evening, the first one I have been able to attend,” Totti said.
“I hope to help with this cause in future, and attend this event again in future. Thanks again to everyone.”

Laureus, which includes the Laureus World Sports Academy, Laureus Sport for Good Foundation and Laureus World Sports Awards, is an international charity initiative with the twin aims of harnessing sport’s power in order to promote social change, while also celebrating sporting excellence in all its forms.
Totti retired having played 786 games for the Giallorossi, his home-town club and one he first represented as a 16-year-old. During his club career he won the Serie A title once and two Coppa Italia titles – while also helping to guide Italy to World Cup victory in 2006.
He now works for Roma as a club director.
