'Roma are a great club': Ivan Marcano's first interview

The Spanish defender, who spent the last four seasons with Portuguese champions FC Porto, signed a three-year contract at Trigoria - signalling a new chapter in the 30-year-old's career.

After signing the paperwork, Marcano sat down with Roma TV to discuss his move.

“I am very happy to be here, and at the same time I’m excited," Marcano said. "I cannot wait to start playing.”

You had other offers, but in the end you chose Roma. Why was that?

“I chose Roma because it is a great club and it has a great history: the club is progressing well, has an interesting project going – and I think the playing style also fits well with my characteristics.”

Did you watch any of Roma’s games from the past season? What did you think?

“I watched almost all of their games in the Champions League, and a few in the league too. It’s a great squad, that they demonstrated: finishing third in a very difficult championship and enjoying a great run in the Champions League. They have a nice playing style.”

You played alongside Kostas Manolas in Greece…

“I know all the players, but obviously I know Manolas personally – as we played alongside one another in Greece, where we won the title.”

What memories do you have of facing Roma in the Champions League?

“If I am not wrong we faced each other two seasons ago, in the play-off to reach the Champions League group stage. On that occasion we won, but I think we were fortunate in some respects and it was really clear that Roma were a top side.”

What did Monchi say to you?

“He is pleased to have me here and I hope I can contribute in the best way possible gto earn the trust of everyone.”

What are your aims for the coming season?

“As a group, we want to finish as high up the table as possible. From a personal perspective I want to do everything I can to help my teammates.”

Do you have a message for the fans?

“I want to thank them for the welcome they have given me, we will do everything we can to ensure Roma finishes as high as possible.”
