Europa League

Cristante post Bologna

Bryan Cristante spoke to Sky Sport after Roma’s defeat to Bologna in the second leg of the Europa League round of 16.

Here’s what the Giallorossi captain had to say.

Tonight was a real feast of football. Roma were knocked out and Bologna made it through, but I think everyone comes out of this with their heads held high. I was very surprised by the crowd's reaction - you went to greet them and were given a somewhat frosty reception. Were you surprised by that as well? Your courage, your sense of belonging to the club and the efforts you’ve put in to work through challenging circumstances weren’t appreciated. Are you as taken aback as we were?

“We're all disappointed to have been knocked out, and the fans expressed that as well. We definitely all wanted to progress. It's tough because we had come from behind. We were convinced that we were playing the game the right way, and instead our Europa League journey ends here.”

You said that you’ve got certain responsibilities. Do you think it's also a question of fatigue? The team have been putting in a real shift and have had a great season so far, but as you said, Roma have conceded too many goals. Would you say that Roma have struggled physically?

“Maybe at certain points of the season fatigue got to us more than others – this happens to all teams. Maybe it's hit us now, even though it shouldn't be the case. We were keen to progress and play another round of the Europa League, but now there's no reason to complain and say we're tired. We need to knuckle down right away because we’ve got another crucial match on Sunday.”
