    Get to know Benedetta Glionna!

Benedetta Glionna – who will turn 22 on 26 July – is the first new signing announced by Roma Women for the 2021-22 season.

Let’s get to know the newest member of the Giallorosse a little bit better...

    Technical characteristics

Glionna is a technically gifted wide forward, who uses her pace to her advantage wherever possible.

She has the ability to beat a player, combined with a real nose for goal. She prefers, where possible, to work off her right foot.

    Career so far

Having come up through the ranks at Fiammamonza, Glionna began playing in the first team at the age of just 14.

In the 2016-17 season, she was part of the Fiammamonza side that clinched promotion to Serie B.

Glionna then moved to Juventus, where she managed to build an important role for herself within the team. Seemingly unfazed by the double step up in quality, Glionna soon earned herself a spot in the starting line-up.

She won two Scudetto titles (2017-18 and 2018-19) with the Bianconere, in addition to one Coppa Italia (2018-19).

A loan move to Verona followed in the 2019-20 season, while last year she was one of the stand-out performers in an impressive Empoli side, where she was managed by Alessandro Spugna – the new Roma boss.

    International honours

Glionna was a mainstay of the Italy U-17 and U-19 sides, working under Enrico Sbardella and Rita Guarino.

A senior call-up from Milena Bertolini followed, with Glionna making her full international debut in a friendly match against France on 20 January 2018. She has become a regular with Italy since.

    The statistics

Glionna has already made 72 appearances in Serie A, scoring 28 goals in the process.

Last season, with Empoli, she scored ten goals and supplied four assists along the way, making her one of the top ten players in Serie A in terms of goal involvements.

Glionna scored more goals from outside of the box than any other player in the 2020-21 campaign, with three.

And she also scored the latest goal of the season, wrapping up Empoli’s 2-0 win over Roma on 5 September 2020 with 95:05 on the clock.

    More trivia

Glionna was the first player to score a competitive goal at the Tre Fontane, finding the net for Juventus in Roma’s first game at the stadium in the 2018-19 season.

Her rasping shot from the right side on 26 minutes was the opening goal in the 4-0 win for Juventus back on 21 October 2018.

In 2018, Glionna was named European Golden Girl, an annual prize awarded to the best U21 player in a top European league.

The prize was won by another member of the Giallorosse – Giada Greggi – the following year, in 2019.
