Roma 4-0 Lecce: Rousing return to form

Roma got things firmly back on track with an emphatic 4-0 home win over Lecce on Sunday evening.

Building on the midweek Europa League victory over Gent, Paulo Fonseca’s side comprehensively ended their recent slump in the league – as they put on a show at the Stadio Olimpico.

First-half goals from Cengiz Under and Henrikh Mkhitaryan put the Giallorossi in control of the game, before Edin Dzeko and Aleksandar Kolarov wrapped things up midway through the second period.

Dzeko’s goal was his 102nd for the club – meaning he now sits level with Vincenzo Montella in sixth position in the club’s all-time scoring charts.

The Giallorossi are back in action on Thursday, as they face Gent once again – looking to build on their 1-0 first leg advantage and qualify for the next round of the competition.

Fonseca's side will go into that game with a lot of confidence restored, following a vibrant display against a side that came into the contest having won their last three Serie A games.

But Cengiz Under almost immediately put Lecce on the back foot, making no mistake with his finish after Mkhitaryan found him with a beautiful through ball.

Soon after it was Mkhitaryan himself who got on the scoresheet, the Armenian firing low and true after his run had been spotted by Dzeko.

Roma rode their luck on occasions after that but, once VAR had confirmed the goal should stand, Dzeko's close-range finish effectively finished off the contest.

In the closing stages it was Kolarov who made it four, as he finished off a sweeping move that involved both Dzeko and substitute Carles Perez.
