Fonseca: The players deserved this victory

Read what coach Paulo Fonseca had to say after Roma's 2-1 victory over Milan at the Olimpico on Sunday evening...

“We fought hard today," Fonseca said after the match. "I have to say that it’s not easy to play three matches in a week right now, but the players deserved this result.”

Nicolo Zaniolo has produced two great performances since that criticism from Fabio Capello. Do you think it spurred him on?

“I don’t think it influenced him, but it’s true that Zaniolo had a very good game today. He scored a great goal and we’ve secured three very, very important points.”

You did everything well today despite not having many players available. Why didn’t Alessandro Florenzi come on?

“Because when Leonardo Spinazzola asked to be replaced, I thought we needed a more defensive player so I put on [Mert] Cetin.”

You’re one behind point Napoli now. Do you think your team can challenge Carlo Ancelotti’s side for a Champions League place?

“Right now we just need to focus on our next game, then we’ll see. The only thing that matters right now is the next match.”

Javier Pastore is looking a different player at the moment. How have you managed to motivate him?

“Yes, and he’s played three games in a week. It’s not easy, but he showed his quality and professionalism today.”
