Roma and CSKA have faced each other on four previous occasions in European competitions: with Roma winning two, the Russian side and the other being (unsurprisingly) a draw. Roma have scored eight goals in those games to CSKA's four.
The two clubs last met in the group stage of the 2014-15 Champions League. On that occasion Roma walked away with four points from the two meetings - winning 5-1 at the Olimpico and drawing 1-1 in the Russian capital.
Back in the first round of the 1991-92 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, Roma progressed against CSKA thanks a 2-1 away win over CSKA - a result that outweighed the 1-0 home defeat they suffered.
Edin Dzeko has now scored 21 goals in 31 games in UEFA competitions for Roma - putting him second place on the club's all-time list. He is now three ahead of Pedro Manfredini (after his hat-trick in the previous game against Viktoria Plzen) but still 17 behind Francesco Totti - who scored 38 goals in Europe during his career.
Against Plzen earlier this month Dzeko scored his third hat-trick as a Roma player - with both the others coming in the Europa League - against Plzen (November 2016) and Villarreal (February 2017).
Eusebio Di Francesco has overseen seven games in European competitions for the Giallorossi - all of them in the Champions League. Of those seven the coach has seen six victories, one draw, 17 goals scored and just two conceded.
With the win over Plzen in the previous round, Roma have now won their last six home games in Europe - equaling their all-time record. Before that 5-0 win over Plzen there was: Chelsea (3-0), Qarabag (1-0), Shakhtar Donetsk (1-0), Barcellona (3-0) and Liverpool (4-2).
Against CSKA in the 2014-15 Champions League group stage Totti broke his own record as the oldest goalscorer in Champions League history - scoring against the Russians at 38 years and 59 days of age.
Since 1927 Roma have faced Russian sides just eight times in all competitions: winning six, drawing one and losing the other. Across those games the Giallorossi scored 17 goals, conceding six. That record includes four meetings against CSKA, one against Dinamo Moscow and one against Locamotive Moscow.
Two current CSKA Moscow players have previously plied their trade in Italy: forward Abel Hernandez represented Palermo from 2009 to 2014 while Hordur Magnusson had spells at Juventus (2010-15), Spezia (loan) and Cesena (loan). Just one current Roma player has experience of playing in the Russian league - Ivan Marcano represented Rubin Kazan for two seasons between 2012 and 2014.
