Stephan El Shaarawy's stunning goals-per-game average, the fruit of five goals in six appearances. Another Roma player to register a similar impact in his first six league matches for the club was Danilo Michelini, who notched six goals in the opening six games of the 1937-38 season. Michelini scored a hat-trick on his debut against Fiorentina (4-0), then one against Napoli (2-1), Lucchese (5-0) and Atalanta (2-0) respectively. El Shaarawy broke the deadlock on Friday for the second week running after his goal for 1-0 against Empoli.
Mohamed Salah, Stephan El Shaarawy and Edin Dzeko have scored four doubles between them in the last three league fixtures. You have to go back to summer 2009 for a similar collective scoring streak, when Francesco Totti scored two doubles and a hat-trick against K.A.A. Gent and FC VSS Kosice in the Europa League qualifying rounds alongside a Daniele De Rossi double away against Gent. The last time we had a similar run of goals in the league was in 2006-07 during Luciano Spalletti's first spell in charge when Roma strung six consecutive doubles together: Totti (3), Rodrigo Taddei (1), Christian Panucci (1) and Simone Perrotta (1) against Fiorentina, Milan, Catania, Sampdoria and Atalanta.
Their seventh league win in a row allowed Roma to put points between themselves and Fiorentina. The Giallorossi haven't been on a winning streak this long since the second half of 2013-14 – nine back-to-back wins – which came after the golden ten at the beginning of that season. Before these two hot streaks, the last seven-match 100% run in Serie A was between January and February 2010. This season's winning spell has thrown up some interesting numbers: Along with 22 goals scored and five conceded, Roma have been ahead by at least two goals in every game and ended the match one goal ahead only against Sampdoria. Also, Spalletti's men have gone into half-time ahead on every occasion apart from the Carpi and Frosinone matches.
Looking at the form guide between the Giallorossi and the Viola, Roma have now beaten Fiorentina by at least three goals on 11 occasions, eight of which have been in Serie A. A 4-1 final scoreline has come up four times already: Twice in Rome – a Coppa Italia fixture in May 1941 and a league contest in March 1998 – plus two Serie A games in Florence in January 1938 and May 1996. Easily the most common scoreline in this fixture is 1-1, which has happened 27 times.
Mohamed Salah's 12 strikes this season – 11 in Serie A and one in the Champions League – puts him one ahead of Miralem Pjanic as the Giallorossi's top goalscorer. The Bosnian has 11 and is the only other Roma player on double figures. The last Giallorossi player to end the season with more than ten was Mattia Destro, with 13 goals in 20 outings in 2013-14.
In losing against Roma, Fiorentina have joined a group of teams the Giallorossi have defeated at least 50 times in Serie A since it became a unified league. The other members of this select club include Torino (57 wins out of 141 games), Atalanta (51 out of 107) and Lazio (50 out of 143). Overall, this was the Giallorossi's 59th win against the Viola in 178 league and cup encounters. Taking matches played in the capital, Roma have 42 wins against Fiorentina and 37 in the top flight – one when a dual-league system was experimented in 1945-46.
Roma have scored 70 goals across league and cup competitions in 36 games this season. The Giallorossi only managed 68 last year, but with an average of 1.94 goals per game they can aim to end this season with the best attacking output since 108 strikes in 2009-10.
Francesco Totti came on in the second half against Fiorentina and picked up his 750th appearance for the club. Il Capitano came inches away from goal No.301 when his free-kick cannoned off the upright. In terms of landmark fixtures, Radja Nainggolan recorded his 99th game for Roma in league and cups against Fiorentina.
