The defeat to Real Madrid was Roma's third from eight home knockout meetings in European competition against Spanish opposition after losses to Real Zaragoza in the 1962 Fairs Cup and Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Cup in 1999. The Giallorossi won each of the remaining five. Roma have scored 17 goals in those eight games, conceding the same number and the Real reverse was the first time they've failed to find the net.
Alessandro Florenzi captained Roma for the first time in European competition, the fifth time he has started a competitive match with the armband.
Roma and Real Madrid have now met nine times in Europe, all of which have come in the Champions League - six matches in the group stage and three in the round of 16. Roma have won three against the 10-times European champions (two in the last 16), drawn one and lost five.
While we wait for the return leg at the Bernabeu, the Giallorossi's record in last 16 second leg away matches in Europe reads as follows: played 13, won six, drawn one, lost six, 13 goals for and 20 against. Roma have gone through on eight of the 13 times that they've played the second leg in the last 16 away from home, beating the following: Lyon and Real Madrid in the Champions League, PSV Eindhoven and Wrexham in the Cup Winners' Cup, Belenenses in the Fairs Cup and Bordeaux, Zurich and Galatasaray in the UEFA Cup.
The number of Champions League games in which Roma have failed to score - 11 at the Olimpico and 12 away. Roma have kept 18 clean sheets, 10 in Rome and eight away.
The game against Real Madrid was Roma's 40th home match in the Champions League. The list begins against none other than Los Blancos, who beat the Giallorossi 2-1 on 11 September 2001 in the latter's first match in the competition's current format. It was a historic occasion - played in a surreal atmosphere to say the least, a few hours on from the terrorist attacks on the Pentagon and New York's World Trade Center - with Francesco Totti scoring Roma's first goal in the Champions League from the spot to take his tally to nine goals in 27 appearances in Europe.
Totti came on for Florenzi for his 97th appearance in Europe with Roma. The captain comfortably leads the way for Giallorossi appearance makers on the continent.
Roma have gone through just once having lost the first leg of a European tie at home. It came in the first round of the 1988-89 UEFA Cup against German side Nürnberg. The visitors won 2-1 at the Stadio Flaminio, before Roma beat them 3-1 in Germany. Since Roma's debut in continental action in 1931, the club have lost eight knockout first leg ties, drawing five and winning 34. Before Real Madrid, only First Vienna (1931), Ferencvaros (1965), Benfica (1983), Nürnberg (1988), Liverpool (2001), Manchester United (2008) and Shakhtar Donetsk (2011) had beaten Roma in the first leg in the capital.
