Toni: I would have liked to have won the title with Roma

Luca Toni

The veteran striker reflected on his time with the Giallorossi after announcing his retirement from professional football

Former Giallorossi man Luca Toni has announced his retirement from professional football, admitting that - although entirely satisfied with his long career - he wished he'd won a trophy during his spell with the Giallorossi.

"I've had a fantastic career and I don't have any particular regrets, though I would have liked to have won the title at Roma," revealed Toni in a press conference, during which he publicly called time on his career as a professional footballer.

The striker, currently plying his trade at Hellas Verona, has made nearly 600 appearances during a career largely spent in Italy's top two divisions, plus a productive spell with German side Bayern Munich.

Toni also played for Roma for six months in the 2009/10 campaign. That season, the Giallorossi - under Claudio Ranieri (who replaced Luciano Spalletti two games into the campaign) - staged a surge up the table towards the end of the year, taking the title race into the final day. Ultimately, however, Roma would finish as runners-up, two points behind Jose Mourinho's Inter.

Toni played a big part in that exciting run after Christmas, scoring five times in 15 games as Roma closed the gap on the league leaders. His most important strike came in the 2-1 win over the Nerazzurri at the Olimpico in March 2010.

Toni has won several honours during his career - most notably the 2006 World Cup with Italy - and has collected a host of personal accolades. He claimed the European Golden Shoe in 2006 and finished as top scorer in Serie A in both 2006 and 2015.

During his farewell press conference, he also stressed how strange it will feel once a couple of other long-serving Italian football icons also hang up their boots.

"I don't know when Francesco Totti and Antonio Di Natale will retire because only they know - as everyone's career is different and they'll have their own ideas," he said. "But when they do, Serie A will lose almost 1,000 goals, if you include mine, and I think that'll be a big loss for Italian football."
