On 27 May 2001, fifteen years ago on Friday, one of the most memorable clashes between Roma and AC Milan in recent memory took place at the Stadio Olimpico.
And though the Giallorossi were held to a 1-1 draw, the point helped them take a big step towards Scudetto glory that season.
There were three matches of the season remaining as AC Milan rolled into town, with Fabio Cappello’s side five points ahead of Sven-Goran Eriksson’s Lazio and six ahead of Carlo Ancelotti’s Juventus.
It was a tough start for the Giallorossi, who went in for half time trailing 1-0 after Francesco Coco had headed the visitors ahead just before the break. Roma streamed forward after the restart, but neither Francesco Totti, Vincenzo Montella nor Gabriel Batistuta could find the breakthrough.
That is, until Montella brought the Olimpico to its feet with one of the finest goals of his career on 64 minutes. Cutting in from the right, he shaped to pull the trigger before lofting a sumptuous chip over Sebastiano Rossi in the AC Milan goal and into the back of the net.
With seconds remaining before the final whistle, news filtered through that Inter had equalised against Lazio thanks to a Stephane Dalmat goal, with Eriksson’s side later leapfrogged by Juventus as they beat Perugia away.
It meant Roma had a four-point advantage over Juventus with two games remaining, while Lazio stayed five points behind the Giallorossi. As we all now know, it was sufficient breathing space for Cappello’s men to secure a much-deserved Scudetto on June 17.
