Opinion: In praise of Edin Dzeko

Opinion: In praise of Edin Dzeko

There's no doubting that Edin Dzeko's form has completely transformed Roma this season - but there's more to the Bosnian than just his goals

There's no doubting that Edin Dzeko's form has completely transformed Roma this season.

The big Bosnian, in his second season with the Giallorossi, has been one of the many protagonists for Luciano Spalletti this term.

Any time you discuss a striker and his value to a team, usually the first statistic that is brought up is goals scored.

In this regard, Dzeko has certainly played his part this season.

Roma’s No. 9 is currently atop of the Serie A scoring chart with 12 goals scored. To truly understand what Dzeko means to this team, though, you have to look beyond goals scored and see the other elements that the Bosnian international brings to the table.

Let’s rewind to Monday’s victory against Milan. The simplistic way to judge Dzeko’s performance would be basing it off whether or not he scored a goal.

However, let’s look at the words of manager Luciano Spalletti after the hard-fought win, as the Giallorossi manager had nothing but praise for his centre-forward’s showing against the Rossoneri: “In the second half, there was only Dzeko, who played a phenomenal match. He was like a ‘shortcut’ for us by allowing the ball to be played to him.”

Little things like this often go unnoticed and are under-appreciated by many fans.

Dzeko’s hold-up play against Vincenzo Montella’s men was nothing short of sensational. The Big Bosnian was able to control the ball and keep-hold of possession to allow his fellow attackers to trudge forward and his defence to readjust.

Furthermore, Dzeko won 58% of his duels on Monday and is averaging 56% won for the season, testament to his hard work and dedication to the team.

However, we must also recognise what Dzeko means to Roma off of the pitch, too.

The striker is one of the undisputed leaders of the Giallorossi and is viewed as such by president James Pallotta, who stated in late September: “Dzeko is a huge talent and also a leader, he works hard throughout the week.”

His work ethic and leadership ability have been more evident this season and it seems to be rubbing off on his teammates, who hold the English and German league title winner in high regard.

Throughout the season, Spalletti has been outspoken in his praise for Dzeko. Just two weeks ago, Spalletti commented on the transformation of the Bosnian from last season to this season: “There are several steps that have marked Edin’s positive change: last year, he struggled when he was replaced by Totti but this has given him the strength and drive to redeem himself. He’s a complete footballer, he can do everything.

"We are more empowered as a team and he knows that he is important for this group. Edin has enormous qualities.”

So while it is easy to judge Dzeko strictly off of his goals output, we should take a moment to appreciate the workload and ‘team’ mentality he offers, someone who is obviously willing to do anything and everything to propel Roma to victory - even if it means sacrificing his own goals tally.
