View from the Opposition: Palermo trying to unearth next star

Lk

Fresh from the 3-3 draw in the Europa League, Roma now shift their focus back to domestic matters with a game against struggling Palermo

To get more of an idea of what the Giallorossi will be up against at the Stadio Olimpico, we spoke to fan Oli Bell about the visitors.

The side that once counted Paulo Dybala and Franco Vazquez among its ranks - and before that Javier Pastore and Edinson Cavani - is currently without a talent of similar stature, and their fortunes this season could depend on who steps up to take a leadership role.

Palermo currently find themselves 18th in the table, having picked up just one win, why have they started the season so poorly?

“You're right in saying its been a poor start to the season and I think despite it being early days in the season we can kiss our chances of winning Serie A goodbye this year! Sadly, I think the start we have made is indicative of the off-field dramas we have been experiencing over recent years - and until there is harmony in the board room and manager’s office, we will struggle to have harmony on the pitch.“

Could Palermo be relegated this year?

“The simple answer to this question is yes, there is every chance we will be relegated this year.“

What was the transfer window like for Palermo?

“Rubbish. We spent about a month whispering that we were going to sign Balotelli and then he decided Nice was a better option, and we sold our best player Franco Vazquez to Sevilla for 15 million.”

Which players could make an impact against Roma?

“Nestorovski has been quite effective up front for us this season scoring four goals in eight matches and he’s flanked by ex-West Ham midfielder Diamanti and Hiljemark - but the latter mentioned picked up a knock midweek against Torino so he might not be fit. Ultimately, I don’t think there are any stars in our line-up right now.”

What sort of tactical set-up could we see from Palermo in this match?

“We have been playing a 3-4-2-1 formation this year so it is likely that is how we will set up. Judging by Roma's style our best chance will be to try and score on the counter-attack.”

How do Palermo fans view Roma? And what have they made of the Roma's start to the season?

“I think it would be silly of me to try and contextualise the relationship between fans from a local’s point of view so I can only speak about what I know and that is that there is a guy at my work who is small and hairy and he supports Roma and I hate him. His name is Jay.”

If you could add one player from Roma to Palermo’s squad, who would it be?

“Well I think I would take Francesco Totti because of the passion and loyalty towards his club. In terms of talent, Nainggolan looks like he has real quality.”

What is your score prediction for the game?

“Heart says 1-0 Palermo. Head says 5-0 Roma.”
