History Lesson: Roma's record in the Europa League last-16

TOI

Ahead of the 13th tie at this stage in the competition, we look back on the Giallorossi history in the last-16 of the UEFA Cup and Europa League...

The two-legged tie against Lyon is the 13th time Roma have been involved in the UEFA Cup/Europa League round of 16.

The Giallorossi have progressed on five of their previous dozen ties at this stage, going out seven times, with a total record of nine wins, three draws and 12 defeats, with 27 goals for and 28 against.

The first time Roma featured among the top 16 sides in the UEFA Cup was back in the 1975-76 campaign. Opponents Club Brugge won 1-0 both in Belgium and at the Olimpico.

Nils Liedholm's Giallorossi met FC Koln in 1982-83, the season which would end in the club's second league title, losing the first leg 1-0 in Germany. The second leg remains one of the club's most iconic fixtures in the 1980s, as second-half strikes from Maurizio Iorio and Paulo Roberto Falcao overturned the deficit and sent the Giallorossi through.

Il Divino's run towards the Curva Sud after scoring the winner a minute from time still lives long in the memory.

In 1988-89, Roma were eliminated by Dinamo Dresden with a pair of 2-0 losses, the first of which came in East Germany.

Roma qualified four times out of four at this stage in the 1990s. The first of these came in 1990-91 when French side Bordeaux were dismissed 5-0 at the Olimpico with a hat-trick from Rudy Voeller and two from Manuel Gerolin, before another Voeller strike, along with a goal from Stefano Desideri sealed a 2-0 second-leg victory on the road.

Roma went on to reach the two-legged final, losing to Inter.

Galatasaray were next up in 1992-93, beaten 3-1 at the Olimpico thanks to a brace from Aldair and a Roberto Muzzi finish. In the return leg, strikes from Claudio Caniggia and Thomas Haessler were enough to seal Roma's place in the next round despite a 3-2 loss.

The meeting with Brondby in 1995-96 produced a thriller. The Giallorossi lost the away leg 2-1 in Denmark despite taking the lead through Daniel Fonseca. The Olimpico then witnessed a star turn from 19-year-old Francesco Totti who opened the scoring, before Abel Balbo doubled Roma's advantage. A Moeller strike for the opposition had the game heading for extra time but on 88 minutes after a glorious backheel from Totti, Amedeo Carboni booked a place in the quarter-finals for Carlo Mazzone's men.

Roma ended FC Zurich's hopes of lifting the trophy in 1998-99. Zdenek Zeman's side won 1-0 at the Olimpico courtesy of a goal from Totti, before drawing 2-2 in Switzerland as Marco Delvecchio broke the deadlock before Totti made it 2-2 after a couple of goals from Shaun Bartlett.

Since then the Giallorossi have reached the last-16 of the UEFA Cup and Europa League five times but never gone beyond that stage. Here are the details.

In 1999-00, it was Leeds United who sent the Giallorossi packing via a Harry Kewell winner after a goalless draw at the Olimpico in the first leg.

Another English team - this time Liverpool - knocked out Roma in 2000-01. Fabio Capello's side would win the title at the end of the season but lost 2-0 at the Olimpico to a Michael Owen double. The 1-0 victory at Anfield via a Gianni Guigou finish ultimately counted for nothing though the Giallorossi were left scratching their heads after referee Garcia Aranda first awarded a penalty before changing his mind.

In 2003-04, the Giallorossi were unable to recover from a 2-0 loss at Villarreal. Emerson and Antonio Cassano both found the net at the Olimpico but Sonny Anderson scored to make it 2-1.

Roma suffered the same fate in 2005-06. After Middlesbrough won the first leg 1-0 at home, Mancini's two goals at the Olimpico didn't prove enough once Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink had given the visitors the lead.

The Giallorossi's last involvement at this stage dates back to 2014-15 and a derby against Fiorentina. The first match ended 1-1 at the Stadio Artemio Franchi with goals from Josep Ilicic and Seydou Keita.

That decent result was undone by an off night at the Olimpico as Roma lost 3-0.
