“It was a dream come true. When [Vujadin] Boskov called me over to come on, I could scarcely believe it was my turn. There’s nothing better than making your Serie A debut for Roma, the club you support.”

“Football has changed a lot over the last 24 years. It’s faster than it was. Over time, the physicality of the game has edged ahead of technical ability but I must say I found adapting to change a natural process. It used to be easier to solve problems with pure technique. Experience over the last few years has helped me a lot.”

“It means living every child’s dream. It’s a great responsibility.”

“That’s an easy one. I had a dream as a kid. I wanted to spend my whole career with the only team I love. I’ve never betrayed them.”

“Rome is the most beautiful city in the world. From one moment to the next, it takes your breath away with narrow streets and stunning scenery. As a Roman and Roma fan it’s been a privilege to spend my whole career here. Sure, I might have won more trophies elsewhere but my loyalty to Roma was like winning the Champions League to me.”

“Steven Gerrard. World class. A role model. But [Wayne] Rooney has had an amazing career too."
7. Totti on… the changing role of No.10s
“Maybe number 10s don’t play in the same area of the pitch as they used to and their movement has probably changed. But I believe creative players are also able to develop the role and offer new options.”
8. Totti on… his longevity
“I’ve looked after myself and, above all, I’ve never given up even in the face of serious injuries. My tenacity has proved crucial.”
9. Totti on… the World Cup and the Scudetto
“They felt different. Of course it’s hard to explain what it means for a Roman to win the Scudetto with Roma. But winning the World Cup in Germany was the peak of my career. I’m very attached to the group of players that lifted the trophy in Berlin.”
10. Totti on… the derby
“Every derby is special when you think about the build-up and excitement in the city. Sure, some of them stay with you forever like the 3-1 win in 1998-99 or when I dedicated a chip to my wife Ilary. I’m very fond of the one from two years ago – not only because my two goals allowed us to come from behind and draw – but also because I featured among the Giallorossi’s legendary players and captains displayed in the fans’ tifo.”
