Know your opponent: Lyon's season so far

LYON

Olympique Lyonnais – our opponents in the Europa League Round of 16 on 9 and 16 March – have endured a series of ups and downs so far this season

Lyon – managed by Bruno Genesio – finished in second place in Ligue 1 last year and therefore sealed automatic qualification for the 2016-17 Champions League group stages, where they were drawn in Group H against Juventus, Sevilla and Dinamo Zagreb.

Genesio’s side finished the group in third place with eight points from the six games, after decisive losses at home to Juventus (0-1) and away to Sevilla (1-0). Lyon beat Zagreb home and away and drew their other two matches.

The French outfit’s third-placed finish saw them enter the Europa League at the Round of 32 stage, where they made short work of AZ Alkmaar. Lyon produced a 4-1 win in the away leg in the Netherlands, courtesy of goals from Lucas Tousart and Jordan Ferri and a brace from Alexandre Lacazette.

Genesio’s men followed that result up with a 7-1 mauling back in Lyon courtesy of a Nabil Fekir hat-trick and goals by Maxwel Cornet, Sergi Darder, Houssem Aouar and Mouctar Diakhaby.

On the domestic front, Lyon currently sit fourth in Ligue 1 with 43 points from 25 games. Lyon are 16 points behind pace-setters Monaco and 13 off the third Champions League place, though they do have a game in hand.

Genesio’s side were knocked out of the Coupe de France by former Giallorossi boss Rudi Garcia’s Marseille in the Round of 32 on 31 January.

Looking at Lyon’s record in Europe, the French side have taken part in the Europa League/UEFA Cup on 13 occasions and the Champions League/European Cup on 16 occasions. They have also participated in the Cup Winners’ Cup four times.

Retired keeper Gregory Coupet has made more European appearances for Lyon than any other player with 94 matches, while the Brazilian Juninho Pernambucano is the club’s all-time leading goalscorer in Europe with 18 goals.

The only past meeting between Roma and Lyon in Europe came in the Champions League in the 2006-07 season, during Luciano Spalletti’s first spell in charge of the Giallorossi. The first leg finished 0-0 at the Stadio Olimpico, with Roma winning the away leg 2-0 courtesy of goals from Amantino Mancini and Francesco Totti.
