3x3: Atletico Madrid, B teams and the Europa League

Arab World Roma Club president Mohammed Safwat Oliemy, Alessandro Florenzi’s biggest fan Theoren Abate and Ajay Menon from AS Roma India are put on the spot with three topical football questions…

The Roma Question: Who will be Atletico Madrid’s most dangerous player on Tuesday night?

Mohammed / @Roma4EverNET : “If we pick one, it’s Antoine Griezmann for sure. He has the character, technique, pace and finishing. He’s a top player and Roma’s defence must be on spot to contain him.”

Theoren / @GrazieTotti91: “Fernando Torres concerns me because he can be lethal in tight places. I have horrible memories with him and he's a player I actually love watching. But I think on Tuesday Griezmann will be the most dangerous - he's been stellar and he holds the key for Atletico's attack.”

Ajay / @ASRomaIndia: “Antoine Greizmann, without a shadow of doubt. All he needs is half a yard of space to punish his opponents and Roma need to be wary of him. The Roma defence has their task cut out in stopping one of the top attacking players in world football currently. Jan Oblak, Atletico's Slovenian keeper, gives very little away and has turned into an excellent shot stopper over the past few seasons. It goes without saying that these kinds of Champions League ties are tight – hence Roma will have to take their chances against a rigid Atletico defence with him in goal.”

The Serie A Question: Should Italy adopt the use of ‘B teams’, as we see in Spain?

@Roma4EverNET : “Sure, just look at how B teams have helped Spain’s youngsters to grow without additional pressure on their backs. In Italy, youth players spend time on loan without playing enough, which really isn’t the ideal solution for most of them. The only way to improve your youth players is by putting them on the field and having them experience competitive football.”

@GrazieTotti91: “Yes, absolutely. It's the way forward and I can't believe Serie A is still so far behind. The gap between the Primavera and the first team is huge. We don't see players making the jump without a loan year or two in Serie B or a lower Serie A side. It's vital for the growth of our youth players and the future of Italian football.”

@ASRomaIndia: “Yes, definitely. Some of the best Italian clubs have gained a reputation over the past few years for not giving youngsters enough playing time in the first team. This model allows a wonderful chance for the Primavera lads to get solid experience at an early stage of their careers and they can eventually break their way into the club's first team. Spain has a bunch of talented youngsters at their disposal who have already made their mark in La Liga and for the national team. Also, let us not forget that managers like Luis Enrique and Zinedine Zidane coached B teams before taking the step up and achieving great success.”

The General Football Question: Which club is most likely to win the Europa League?

@Roma4EverNET : “It’s still very early into the season and the competition will have eight teams who will join from the Champions League. But if Milan are focused, they are a strong contender.”

@GrazieTotti91: “This is a difficult one. Given the teams that are in the tournament right now, I'd have to say Arsenal, but it depends who drops down from the Champions League. I hope Roma stays out of that discussion.”

@ASRomaIndia: “Arsenal are the favourites for the Europa League at this point in time. They could follow a similar strategy as Manchester United last season, with an aim to win the Europa League and enter the Champions League. I wouldn’t rule out Sevilla though if they drop out of the Champions League group stages, as it is their favourite competition!”
