Nainggolan: We're still in a great position

GIM

Radja Nainggolan believes Roma still have every reason to feel confident about their Champions League situation, despite Wednesday's defeat to Atletico Madrid.

The loss at the Estadio Metropolitano - a 2-0 defeat after second half goals from Antoine Griezmann and Kevin Gameiro - prevented the Giallorossi from securing their place in the last-16 of the competition, and means they must now beat Qarabag at home on the final day in order to do so.

Nevertheless, Nainggolan believes that is a situation that few observers thought the side would be in when the draw was made.

"At the start of the group, who would have thought that we would have qualification in our own hands going into Qarabag at home?" Nainggolan noted. "We need to stay confident and give everything we have in the final game."

He added: "We played well in the first half. We won the ball three or four times in their half and we should have done more with the final ball. We fell apart a little bit after we conceded the goal."

Diego Simeone said you would be the perfect player for him...

"That’s nice to hear but I’m focused on Roma. I made the decision I wanted to make last year. I’m happy – I like representing this team and I feel calm. I have everything I need to be happy so I can’t see why I’d want to change anything."

It was a very different game to the match in Rome.

"We played a lot more football than we did in the first game. We were more afraid of making mistakes then because it was the first match in a tough group. We showed character in the first half. We press high up the field so sometimes the top teams are going to hurt you. We’ve lost today but I think we can take positives from it for the season ahead. We’re doing well overall but this shows that we need to roll our sleeves up and focus on working hard."

How does it feel to wear the captain’s armband?

"It’s an honour. Before me it was [Francesco] Totti and now we have [Daniele] De Rossi and [Alessandro] Florenzi. It’s lovely to represent this team. I have it in me and I always try to give my all, whether I’m wearing the armband or not."
