Mourinho: "No doubt our attitude will be spot on"

Find out what Jose Mourinho had to say in his media conference ahead of Thursday's Europa League play-off return leg against Red Bull Salzburg.

Paulo Dybala and Tammy Abraham are back in training. How are they doing? Have they fully recovered?

“We'll see tomorrow. They're definitely not 100%. Available to give us a hand, yes. We'll see and decide what the best solution is.

“Playing three doubtful players together – with [Lorenzo] Pellegrini – is probably too much to ask, but they can all help out. We couldn't do it in the last game because it was impossible for Paulo and Lorenzo but I think they'll be involved tomorrow, whether they start or not. All three could be involved.”

Do you expect Salzburg to play differently from the first leg?

“They have a 1-0 lead so I don't know. It's hard to say. 1-0 is an advantage but it's a small advantage. I don't think they're the sort of team who will come here and try to hold out for a 0-0 draw. I don't think that's their way. I think they'll try to play football and attack.

“Perhaps it will be a similar game to the first leg but with a different result. The team that had the best chance of winning the first game was us. And we lost. We'll see if we can make it different tomorrow.”

The Roma CEO Pietro Berardi said he's sure you'll remain at Roma. Is that just his view or have you spoken to him?

“No, it's just his view. I haven't spoken to him about this. It's just his view.”

How important will getting into the Champions League be for your future?

“Today, the day before the match, the last thing I want to think about is my future. My future or the team's.

“We need to think about tomorrow. It's not a league game but a European game. It's in or out. I don't want to think about the future. Right now the future is tomorrow. And I don't want to talk about my personal situation.”

Have you seen the desire to win in the eyes of your players? And how is Georginio Wijnaldum? Could he start the match?

“Wijnaldum is improving – we're seeing that every day. I'm sure you saw it in the 10 minutes he played against Verona. He's getting his intensity back. So yes, I'd say he's an option for us – and not just for a five-minute cameo to find his feet again. He's improving.

“I haven't seen anything particular in the eyes of my players. For the players who played against Verona it was a recovery session, low intensity, so there was nothing to see. But I'm sure the lads want to reach the next round.

“I have no doubt we'll go out there in the right frame of mind. I'm surprised when this team isn't in the right frame of mind. We're a team that always gives everything, regardless of the limits we have.

“I have no doubt that the lads who play, regardless of who plays, who's at their best and who's not, I have no doubt that tomorrow the lads' eyes will be saying we want to win.”

What sort of atmosphere are you expecting at the stadium?

“The other day I ended the conference saying that I apologised for what I said because it's not my job. I'm the one who should be criticised by them. I've already apologised for what I said. Tomorrow I expect my team to have the right attitude – that's where I can try to influence things for the better.

“Obviously we're used to having passionate fans. We're used to having fans that gave us so much last year, especially in decisive games like this. Bodo, Leicester, Vitesse. They played with us. If they play with us again, it will help.

“It will help with our intensity, our dynamism, our inertia. It will be the stadium they want and the stadium we're capable of creating. The players help with their attitude and the football they play – that helps create a positive atmosphere or a less positive one.

“What we can control is ourselves as a team and as a group of players. And we've always said that the most important game is the next one. That the most important competition is the next one we're playing in. Today you didn't ask me if Serie A or the Europa League is more important, but of course it's our next game. Tomorrow. The competition we're playing in tomorrow. We'll go out there and give it everything we've got. And I hope the crowd will understand that we're giving it everything we've got.”
