Overcoming the Obstacles: A new matchday initiative for disabled fans

The club has launched a new initiative to ensure Roma fans with disabilities are still able to get to the Stadio Olimpico for the club’s home matches.

‘Overcoming the Obstacles’ (‘Superiamo gli Ostacoli’) will begin ahead of Saturday's home match against Venezia and will continue into the next season, as the club – in conjunction with the volunteer network Protezione Civile Arvalia – will make available a number of vehicles modified for disabled passengers to help disabled fans and their companions to still attend Giallorossi matches.

Volunteers will help organise and arrange matchday transport for fans; accompanying them to the stadium, providing assistance during the course of the game and then overseeing their safe return to their homes.

“We are very invested in this initiative - it’s our responsibility to help all our disabled fans to get to the stadium and to watch the game, but also to assist them leaving the stadium and getting home,” said Pietro Berardi, the club’s Corporate CEO.

“We want to start now, the last home game of the current season, with the aim of ensuring that this activity and others that support it are fully in place for the entirety of the next campaign.”

“We are delighted to welcome this project,” said Erika Stefani, Italy’s Minister for Disability.

“Sport is synonymous with inclusion, and every initiative that removes barriers also creates opportunities for all - not just those with disability.

“We are pleased that sports teams are paying attention in this area and hope it will encourage progress elsewhere too.”

    Audio Commentary

The Club will also continue to ensure the supply of radio players equipped with disposable earphones for blind fans.

The devices, preset to broadcast the match commentary, can be collected free of charge at the disabled entrance to the Tribuna Tevere, without any need to make a reservation in advance.

This latest club initiative will be entirely financed from the proceeds of Roma match-worn and match-issued shirts, auctioned off via the CharityStars website.
