Abraham converted from the spot deep into added time after Nicolo Zaniolo was adjudged to have been impeded inside the box - releasing the tension after a 90 minutes where it seemed Roma might not score regardless of what they tried.
Lorenzo Pellegrini, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Gianluca Mancini and more all went close on multiple occasions, with only a combination of bad luck and the heroics of Spezia goalkeeper Ivan Provedel keeping the scoreline even.
Kelvin Amian's dismissal shortly before half-time further unbalanced the match, yet Roma continued to suffer awful luck in front of goal - right up until the very final moments, when VAR intervened to give Abraham the chance to decide things once and for all.
And that the England international certainly did, driving his shot low and hard beyond Provedel to elate the travelling supporters.
Roma are back in action next weekend - they host Atalanta at the Stadio Olimpico.
