Veretout credits crowd for eventual win

Jordan Veretout scored a brace to drive Roma to a 3-1 win over Fiorentina on Sunday night - ensuring a winning start to their 2021-22 Serie A campaign.

After Henrikh Mkhitaryan had seen his opener negated by Nikola Milenkovic, Veretout profitted from two fine passes from Tammy Abraham and Eldor Shomurodov to turn the game decisively in the Giallorossi's favour.

"It was important to win the first game," he told DAZN afterwards.

"The boss asked us to win, to make sure we picked up the three points. Fiorentina play good football but we remained organised - and with the stadium behind us we were able to progess in the second half and eventually score the goals."

He added: "In the first half we struggled a bit at times and the boss told us we needed to improve in the second. Not everything is working as it should just yet, so we need to keep working. But we are still at the start of the season and if we keep working together we can win other games. Now we are focused on Thursday."

Veretout was asked how he is finding it to work for Jose Mourinho.

"The relationship is really good," he said.

"We are working hard, when the moment is right to joke around a bit we do - he's always there with us. It was fantastic to have the fans back here after two years."
