Roma 1-2 AC Milan: Painful home defeat

Roma were beaten 2-1 by AC Milan on Sunday night in an occasionally ill-tempered and controversial game at the Stadio Olimpico.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Franck Kessie got the goals on the night for the visitors - the second of those coming from a disputed penalty decision that the referee nevertheless upheld following a VAR check.

Substitute Stephan El Shaarawy grabbed one back in injury time, but it proved too late to spark an unlikely turnaround, as Roma's 10-game unbeaten home run finally came to an end.

Jose Mourinho's side started the game brightly, with Lorenzo Pellegrini going close on a couple of occasions, but went behind in the first half after Ibrahimovic found the bottom corner with a rasping free-kick.

In the second half, shortly after Ibrahimovic had a second goal chalked off by VAR, Stefano Pioli's side were able to double their advantage - as the referee insisted Roger Ibanez had indeed fouled Ibrahimovic in the box.

A red card for Theo Hernandez soon after gave the Giallorossi hope, but ultimately El Shaarawy's thumping finish in the first of six minutes of injury time left them with too little time to find an equaliser.

Mourinho's side are back at the Olimpico on Thursday: Bodo/Glimt are the visitors in the Europa Conference League.
