Pitch dedicated to Amedeo Amadei is unveiled at Trigoria

The two parties met for the unveiling of the new Campo Amedeo Amadei at Trigoria on Monday.

Amadei, the club's famous striker from the late 1930s to late 1940s, was surpassed by Dzeko when the Bosnian scored in December to move third in the club's all-time goalscoring charts.

Earlier this week relatives of Amadei were welcomed to Trigoria in order to officially unveil the pitch - with Amedeo chosen to be recognised for his contributions to the club by fans on the Socios app.

The club's General Manager Tiago Pinto was also on hand to welcome the Amadei family.

"Four months here has been more than enough time for me to understand the important role Amadei played at this club - and today it is a great pleasure for us to finally open this pitch," he said.

"For me it is an honour to have matched a great player like Amadei," Dzeko added. "I am really happy to be here for this historic moment."

Amadei scored 111 goals for the Giallorossi, making his debut for the club when he was just 15 years old. He remains the youngest goalscorer in Serie A history.

He also captained the club, and was one of the first players inducted into the AS Roma Hall of Fame.

Amadei's grandson, Alessandro Pergolini, and great grandson Edoardo were on hand to officially cut the ribbon.

The moment clearly was very emotional for Alessandro.

"It's an honour to see a pitch be named after my grandfather, who gave his life for Roma," he said.

"Having Edin Dzeko here as well only makes it more special. On behalf of my family, I want to thank the club for recognising my grandfather in such a significant way."

Questa inaugurazione arriva a pochi mesi dal centenario della nascita di Amadei, avvenuta il 26 luglio del 1921 a Frascati.

Soprannominato "Il fornaretto", fin da ragazzo lavora proprio nel forno di famiglia, ma già si vede che è un grande talento sia nel calcio sia nel ciclismo. Usa la bici per le consegne e un giorno del 1935 anche per andare a Campo Testaccio, dove la Roma organizza dei provini. Viene preso subito e inizia la brevissima trafila nel settore giovanile Il 2 maggio 1937, infatti, debutta in Serie A a 15 anni, 9 mesi e 6 giorni.

È stato a lungo un record assoluto, poi eguagliato da Pietro Pellegri e battuto proprio in questa settimana dal calciatore del Bologna Wisdom Amey, sceso in campo a 15 anni e 274 giorni.

È ancora lui, invece, il più giovane calciatore ad andare in gol in Serie A. Una. settimana dopo, a 15 anni, 9 mesi e 13 giorni, segna contro la Lucchese.

Continua a crescere, nel 1938 va un anno in prestito all'Atalanta, che prova a trattenerlo senza successo. E' un'ala veloce, con un fisico impressionante e dotato di un tiro potentissimo. Questa qualità convince l'allenatore Alfred Schaffer a spostarlo nel ruolo di centravanti.

È la svolta della sua carriera: nel 1940-41 segna 24 gol tra campionato e Coppa Italia e nella stagione successiva con 18 reti è il capocannoniere e il simbolo della Roma che vince il suo primo scudetto. Decisivi, in particolare, i suoi gol alla Lazio, al Torino, al Venezia e al Livorno. È il primo calciatore ad essere soprannominato "Ottavo Re di Roma", diventa capitano, continua a segnare anche in annate meno fortunate e nei campionati di guerra. Il 16 novembre 1947 è protagonista di un derby eroico, vinto da una Roma rimasta in 9 uomini grazie a un suo gol.

Realizza altri 19 gol in quella che è la sua ultima stagione in giallorosso. Ceduto all'Inter per esigenze di bilancio, chiede di non giocare contro la Roma qualora la sua ex squadra si trovasse in zona retrocessione. È sempre rimasto legato alla Società, con 111 gol è il quarto miglior realizzatore della storia del Club dopo Totti, Pruzzo e Dzeko. Nel 2012 è entrato nella Hall of Fame.
