Top Five: Our longest European away trips

On this day in 2005 the team played Tromso in Norway... but where does that game sit among our furthest-flung away trips in UEFA competition?

After getting through the play-off stage that season, the Giallorossi began their UEFA Cup campaign with a long trip to Norway to face Tromso.

It was Luciano Spalletti's first season in charge, and as he attempted to win over his new supporters at the Stadio Olimpico the coach had to deal with an early trip virtually to the North Pole.

At the time, it was indeed the furthest the club had ever travelled for an away game: 4,180 kilometres, to be precise about it.

Twenty-five years on from the match, which saw the Giallorossi win through goals from Sammy Kuffour and Leandro Cufre, we take a look at the five longest away trips we've been on to date (Thursday's trip to Bern, 924km, to face Young Boys will not quite make the cut...).

    5. Donetsk (Ukraine): 3173 km

The Giallorossi have faced Shakhtar three times away from home in European competition - although one of them, a 2-1 defeat in 2018, actualy took place at the slightly nearer city of Kharkiv.

In the group stage of the 2006-07 Champions League the Giallorossi lost 1-0 at the old Shakhtar stadium, while in 2011 it was a 3-0 loss suffered at the Dombass Arena.

    4. Tampere (Finland): 3220 km

It was in Finland that the Giallorossi played the last-16 of the Cup Winners' Cup in 1991-92 - drawing 1-1 at the home of Tampere, which set the side up for a comfortable 5-2 home win and progression to the next round.

    3. Gaziantep (Turkey): 3375 km

Not far from Syria, Roma's trip to Gaziantep in the 2003-04 UEFA Cup last-32 comfortably slots in on the podium in this list.

The Turkish side won 1-0 on the night, although a 2-0 win by the Giallorossi back at home in the second leg was enough to clinch progression.

    2. Tromso (Norway): 4180 km

Tromso may be a city of fewer than 70,000 inhabitants (about the same as the capacity of the Stadio Olimpico), but at barely 300km from the North Pole it is certainly not an easy place to go to.

The Giallorossi navigated the challenge in 2005, however.

    1. Baku (Azerbaijan): 4455 km

Roma faced Qarabag in the capital of Azerbaijan, Baku, back in the group stage of the 2017-18 Champions League - winning the game 2-1 and putting them on course to win a group that would also include Chelsea and Atletico Madrid.

Kostas Manolas and Edin Dzeko scored the goals on the night, ensuring the longest away trip in the club's history was concluded in positive fashion.
