Gallery: Our many black kits from 1997 to today!

On Monday the club revealed its new third kit for the upcoming campaign, with a distinctive black and orange design inspired by the classic Nike Air Max silhouette.

The club has a strong recent history of turning to black (and orange) to form the basis of its alternate kits - here are all of them since 1997.

1997-98

This was the first time in almost 50 years that the club went back to wearing a predominantly black shirt. The orange detailing would become a trademark of many similar kits that would follow.

1998-99

In feel, colour and design this is perhaps the kit that most resembles the new shirt, with grey this time replacing the safari print as the third colour palette.

This shirt was technically not black, however - the colour being officially listed as anthracite grey.

1999-00

For the third straight season under the technical sponsorship with Diadora, black was the main colour for the third kit. In design it was the same as the home kit in every aspect bar the colouring - with black replacing the red.

2002-03

For two seasons Kappa opted for dark blue for the alternate (third) kit, but in 2002-03 they brought us back to black - a colour they would also return to consistently over the coming years.

2007-08

2008-09

2009-10

In a season where Claudio Ranieri's side ran so close to winning the Scudetto, the exciting element of this kit was the Lupetto on the badge - the return of the wolf's head to the kit for the first time since 1997.

2010-11

For this season the usual club badge was back - and so was the orange detailing to really make the kit stand out.

2011-12

2012-13

In the last year of the deal with Kappa, it was the yellow and red collar detailing that made this kit stand out from some of the others to precede it.

2013-14

For this season the club produced its own shirts - and this kit was actually the result of an online poll among fans, with black beating out a blue option and a green one.

Moving to Nike following the season, the American supplier has twice gone towards black for kit inspiration previously.

2014-15

2017-18

Okay, technically this one was brown camoflage - but from a distance who can really tell the difference? The orange accent detailing gives the overall look a similar vibe.

2020-21
