On Monday morning, the club’s chief executive Giudo Fienga and vice president Mauro Baldissoni personally delivered the first box of Roma Cares materials to the Mayor of Rome, Virginia Raggi.
Thousands of masks donated by AS Roma have already begun to be distributed among those most at risk in the city.
Among the organisations who will receive the personal protective equipment will be local and metropolitan police headquarters, Atac (the city’s public transport organisation) and the city’s social welfare and culture offices.
Later this week, 17,000 masks will be delivered to various hospitals and critical health organisations around the Italian capital.
“I would like to thank AS Roma, who are closer than ever to the city’s residents,” Mayor Raggi said.
“As we know, over the last few months the club has also been delivering vital supplies to those in most need.
“We applaud the club because in a moment of real need, they have stood up and made a difference. It is an honour for our city to have a club that shows such consideration for its citizens.”
All of the masks being distributed by the club are washable and can be re-used up to 30 times.
“It is a huge honour for us to be able to participate in today’s meeting, because we wanted to do what we can to support all of the key workers who will help our city return to normality,” said Fienga.
“In this difficult time for all of us, Roma Cares has tried to make sure it helps not just supporters of the club, but every Rome citizen in need of support.”
More than 4,000 masks have been distributed to local police officers, while 7,000 have been assigned to drivers and employees of Atac.
“The Roma Cares project did not start here, for six years it has been making a concrete contribution to the city and its suburbs,” said Daniele Frongia, the city’s Minister for Sport.
“Right now, with the Covid-19 pandemic, all their actions are much more visible. There are so many people who would like to thank Roma. On behalf of so many city institutions, I would like to express our sincere thanks and gratitude.”
Representatives for the local police and transport forces also both expressed their appreciation on Monday.
“We are delighted to receive this donation, which will support us until the end of the year and allow us to continue our work,” said Antonio Di Maggio, Chief Superintendent of Local Police for Roma Capitale.
“The initiative is hugely important and underlines once again the humanity of this club.”
Fabrizio Frustaci, Chief Commercial Officer for Atac, added: “This donation from Roma Cares is very important for us, because it means all our employees can be ready to go as and when the regulations are updated.
“The initiative will be a huge help and will cover everyone involved in the organisation.”
The delivery of PPE to key workers in the region is just one of a number of initiatives Roma Cares and the club have been working on since the start of the Covid-19 epidemic.
Over the past few months, the club has delivered eight pulmonary ventilators and eight intensive care beds to hospitals in the capital – along with over 20,000 masks – not including the 32,000 pledged today, 30,000 pairs of gloves, and over 10,000 bottles of sanitising gels, as well as medical and food supplies.
Tablets and smartphones have also been distributed among schoolchildren and patients in need.
At the start of April, the club launched the campaign ASSIEME (‘Together’), which covers all the initiatives launched during the current period.
