Lazio 1-1 Roma: Spoils shared in thrilling derby

In a tense encounter that saw the woodwork struck on no fewer than six occasions, Aleksandar Kolarov's early penalty was eventually cancelled out by Luis Alberto's close range strike.

Lazio thought they had won the game late on but their strike was correctly ruled out after the ball went of play in the build-up - silencing the 'home' crowd.

Never has the derby taken place so early in a Serie A campaign, and neither side wasted any time in getting at their opponents.

By half-time the post had been hit five times - with Nicolo Zaniolo agonisingly denied twice for the Giallorossi as low drives hit the inside of the goal and bounced clear.

Nevertheless Paulo Fonseca's side went into the break ahead, thanks to Kolarov's nerveless delivery from the spot.

Edin Dzeko's attempted cross into the box was handled by Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, with Kolarov sending Thomas Strakosha the wrong way to notch against his old club once again.

Roma were perhaps not at their best despite the first-half scoreline, but improved in the second half and strived to create openings to finish off the game.

Before that, however, they were caught out at the back - Ciro Immobile cutting back for Luis Alberto to squeeze home an equaliser.

That set up a frantic, nervy final 20 minutes - with neither side wanting to lose but both desperately hoping to find a way to win.

There were chances at either end but, bar Lazio's correctly disallowed finish in injury time, a decisive strike to cap off a thrilling game would not be forthcoming.
