Giugliano keen to realise potential at Roma

Riding high from a hugely productive experience at the World Cup this summer, midfielder Manuela Giugliano is confident Roma is the perfect club for her to continue her development as a player.

Giugliano was a key player for Italy as the team reached the quarter-finals of the competition, a surprise run that only underlined the quality – and the potential – of the women’s game in Italy.

Giugliano subsequently took the decision to join Roma Women from AC Milan, revealing that the ambition and infrastructure of the project was what had attracted her to the Italian capital.

“I chose Roma because I think it is a club that can help me a lot, that will enable me to improve year after year,” Giugliano told Roma TV.

“The club clearly believes in women’s football and believes in helping develop young players. It’s a long-term project and I’m delighted to be here.”

Reflecting on her experience in France this summer, Giugliano acknowledged that it had a profound impact.

The 21-year-old played almost every minute for the Azzurre, controlling things from midfield for Milena Bertolini.

While the experience underlined the inherent quality of women’s football in Italy, it also revealed Giugliano as one of the shining young talents in the game.

“The World Cup definitely left a big impression on me, in a lot of ways,” she said.

“I grew a lot, as both a person and a player. Playing in a World Cup was a unique experience for me, as I think it is the dream of every kid that plays football.

“I’m approaching pre-season looking to get a better understanding of both my strengths and those of the squad. The World Cup was an important moment for us. We can only continue to grow and reach professionalism – because that is something we are still lacking today.”

Taking the No. 10 shirt this season, Giugliano is capable of playing numerous roles across midfield – but may initially be tasked with providing creativity in the final third.

“I see myself mostly as a deep-lying playmaker, but my opinion has always been that a footballer should be complete and be able to play in many roles and in many formations,” she said.

“So I am here for the coach in whatever role she wants to use me."
