Nzonzi pledges to make big impression after completing Roma switch

Steven Nzonzi has pledged to do everything he can to help Roma win silverware this year, after he completed his move to the club on Tuesday.

The 29-year-old, a World Cup winner this summer with France, agreed a four-year contract with the Giallorossi at Trigoria after arriving in Rome on Tuesday afternoon – and cannot wait to get started in the next phase of his career.

“I’m very happy to be here and to be a Roma player,” Nzonzi told Roma TV. “I’m very pleased to be here.

“I really felt that the club wanted me to come. This is why I am here, and I’m happy to join such a big club.”

On his targets for the campaign, he added: "The most important thing is always the goal of the team. My personal goal is to improve my game, but the team’s objective is more important.

"For any footballer, winning trophies is the highest it gets. It’s not easy to win, but that is what we work for. Even if it’s hard to win, we aim for this.

"Hopefully we’ll do our best to try to win.”

A World Cup winner this year and a Europa League winner in 2016 with former club Sevilla, Nzonzi believes the rapid improvement he has enjoyed in recent years is far from over.

“I always want to learn, I always want to improve,” he said. “It doesn’t matter about your age, the most important thing for a player is to improve and give your best.

"[I want] to keep working hard, so I can be a better player and hopefully bring my experience to the team.”

Having worked alongside Roma sporting director Monchi already in his career, the former Stoke City and Blackburn Rovers midfielder feels comfortable in the capital – and was motivated by the reception he received from fans at Rome Ciampino airport.

“Yes, Monchi signed me at Sevilla,” he noted. “He helped me a lot when I was there. We always had a lot of respect for each other and he helped me a lot at Sevilla, so I’m very happy to be here and work with him again.

“I’m very happy for the welcome that [the fans] gave me at the airport and the support they showed.

"I just want to say that I will give my best on the pitch and hopefully be a very good player for this team.”
